4RV Reading, Writing, & Art News: Book Review -- Conscience: Breaching Social Amnesia

One of the books I had the honor of creating the cover art and design for, Conscience: Breaching Social Amnesia, was reviewed on OKNews. Check it out ...

4RV Reading, Writing, & Art News: Book Review -- Conscience: Breaching Social Amnesi...: William Young gave 4RV Publishing permission to re-post his review of Conscience: Breaching Social Amnesia, which was posted on OKNews. Below is an excerpt. Follow the link above to read the full review.

We know this truth about our past, but some Americans would just like us to forget about it. But vehoae says, “No, look. This is what we did. Here is the proof.” Her appendix, exhibits, bibliography and end note citations take up a third of the book. (I wasn’t kidding about exhaustive research.)

'One More Mystery' sale for Vivian Zabel, Dec 26th ...

I have been working with Vivian Zabel for about four years. I illustrated & designed her Midnight Hours jacket cover, illustrated and designed her Stolen book cover, illustrated her When Death Sat Next to Me poem, and most recently illustrated and designed the cover for her short eStory One More Mystery. I am also the Art Director at her publishing house, 4RV Publishing, so that's a lot of working together. Luckily, we think a lot alike and share a common sense of aesthetic.

So why am I going to buy an eBook on December 26th that's not in my typical genre when everybody knows I prefer books that take up shelf space over computer space (and I don't have a reader)?
  • One, because Vivian wrote it and she is one of the few amazing writers who can pull people into a story, even if it's outside their normal reading zone.
  • Two,  One More Mystery is in a contest, on Lulu, for the chance at a Nook reader and I happen to know Vivian could really use one.
  • Three, I did the cover art and design and I try to support my authors any way I can, even if it's not a dust collecting, shelf filling, "cuddle up with a good" book.   lol
To get the skinny on how you can  get your own eBook copy of One More Mystery (remember, only purchases on December 26th help Viv in the contest), head on over to her Brain Cells &  Bubble Wrap blog.

Until next time...

Amber LaShell announces the official release of 'Celtic Secrets'

One of my authors, Amber LaShell, announced that Celtic Secrets, book two of her Abby Kane Trilogy, is officially up for sale in eBook format. I know for a fact that it will be ready in print soon, too (for those 'real book' lovers like me), because I have inside information ... I have hidden cameras in her studio ... I tapped her phone lines ... I'm ... lol.

Ok, you guessed it. I'm the cover artist and have to format the cover for print. ;P

I am very excited about the series. I have the honor of doing book three's cover, when it's time, and the re-print/second edition of book one, giving it a fresh new look and insuring the series looks consistent when placed together on a shelf or side by side on a website.

Make sure you swing over to Amber's blog and let her know who sent ya. :D She has links and codes posted so, for a limited time, you can get a free copy of both eBooks one and two.

Until next time...

Silverdream & Bloodfire in the newspaper ...

I just love hearing about one of my book covers being seen in the media. :D

Brenda Wynn, author of Silverdream & Bloodfire, shared the above image with me yesterday. It's a scan of the newspaper article, in The Enterprise, featuring her book and my cover art. I don't know if you'll be able to see what it says or not, but I am hoping if you click on the image, it will blow up big enough to be read.

Basically, the story is about a disabled college student who finds her way into an alternate world and reality, one in which dragons exist and she is no longer disabled. A prince from that world is transported to her world, as well, suddenly having to deal with her disability, himself.

To the left you can see the cover a little better, in full color. Brenda provided a rough sketch giving me a good idea as to what she envisioned for the cover, such as the dragon's specific color scheme and the MC's clothing. We discussed the character's emotion, too. Was she scared to be flying so high on a fierce dragon, especially since she is confined to a wheelchair in her world and can't even walk, much less fly? I wanted to be sure to capture the proper expression and gesture.

I am hoping to have spare copies (hopefully signed) at MidSouthCon XXX this coming March, where I am a guest artist and will be selling signed prints, books, and novelties in the art room.

Let me know if you can't read the article and I'll try to figure something out. :D

Until next time...

'Snowbird', latest fantasy art piece by WillowRaven

cropped version of 'Snowbird' *

I don't get to do work that is just for my own fulfillment very often, work based on that 'thing' in my head that makes images all on it's own, without the cues of an author's or publisher's request, but when I do, it satisfies something in me I can't explain. I assume it's that way with any person who delves into any of the creative arts.

Don't get me wrong, there are very few projects that don't excite me and create a sense of pride and accomplishment after I do them for a published work, but somehow, when I do something just because, it's a bit more personal and therapeutic. I have found my personal work says a lot more about me as a person than any of my other works, although people who know me say they can see aspects of me in everything I do ... lol.

Well, my schedule has been thankfully very full, but, so as not to stifle the part of me that makes the rest of me tick, I am determined to do more personal work. Maybe one after a milestone on long projects, or maybe one in between two or three shorter projects.

Anyway, because of it's potentially perceived provocativeness, the version presented here is cropped. The full Snowbird scene is viewable on my 'Dark Fantasies' site, accessible via my Realm of WillowRaven menu page (at the bottom of page). That site is being reserved for my over 18 fans, so please do not abuse my willingness to share those works unless you are 18 or over, or have parental consent.

I am definitely taking advantage of the sale on mugs in my Zazzle Shoppe, today. Mugs are 50% off and I ordered several to have on hand for the MidSouthCon, coming up in March.

WillowRaven's latest piece, 'Fish Bowl' is my third for Scape magazine:

I feared I had bitten off more than I could chew with this latest work, afraid I'd miss my Nov 30th deadline, but I managed to pull it off this morning ... whew!

Fish Bowl was inspired by AshleyRose Sullivan's Fish Bowl, scheduled to be featured in the upcoming issue (it's 3rd) of Scape magazine. I can't share the sory, of course, but I can give you a sip:

... Dust swirled around that world. Around all the world he knew. But inside his tank, his fingertips pressed against the glass, he could not fathom it.
Little girls and boys, stared up at him, at his blue tinted water, at his gills. They were covered in it. Covered in the dust that had spread like a quiet infestation. Their lungs were full of it. Their skin was caked with it, red and brown, where his was slick and fish-scale green.
Mortimer spun in the tank, large enough for he and one other, then did a somersault through the water. He swam like a fish, which is what he happened to be—an impossible primate with webbed digits and gills. A young man who filtered air from water when everyone around him breathed red dust. He was born like a dolphin, into the water, and never left.

A crowd formed around his tank and peered through clear wall and water to his body, his face, his hair and spindly fingers. He swam suddenly, toward the glass and allowed the crowd to see his second set of eyelids, his suction cup tipped fingers and they gasped then laughed as he did a backward flip, and swam to the bottom. A little girl tapped on the glass. It was so near to inaudible that Mortimer would've missed it completely if he hadn't turned in time to see her.
Fine grains of dirt covered her pigtails and a faint rusty layer clung to her pink cotton candy but, Mortimer figured, she probably wouldn't even notice.
A plume of fire shot into the sky as Johnny, all tattoos and sweating skin, exhaled into the night and the crowd moved on....

I can't wait until you guys can read the rest. I'll be sure to update ya'll when it goes live ;D. I'll be spending the rest of the day uploading it to my Zazzle Shoppe and ImageKind Gallery, but feel free to drop me a note if you wish to chat.

Until next time...
