Tainted ~ Book cover art & design

TaintedD. Hart St. Martin's second book in her Lisen of Solsta book series went through many artistic phases. At one point, a specific physical characteristic of the MC was intended to be shown, but too many other factors made that impractical. Even though a lot of work went into that attribute, just to have it made so subtle, you can only see it if you know to look for it, I think the subtlety adds a bit of mystery. (See if you can find her unique attribute which is barely noticeable.)

book blurb:

In Fractured, Lisen Holt, Valley girl, beach lover, learned she doesn't belong on Earth. Re-adapting to Garla, the place of her birth, proved difficult, but the greater challenge was learning that she is the Heir-Empir and must confront her brother for the throne. Witnessing her only friend’s murder, defending her own life with forbidden power, and succumbing to possession by her friend’s soul left Lisen fractured, with little hope she’d ever recover.

The story continues in Tainted with Lisen and her guardian companion, Korin, traveling to the great desert of Thristas. They hope to find safety in the anonymity of the barren wilderness, out of the range of Garlan spies. There, Lisen learns the ways of Thristas and its fierce people who view Garla’s Empir as a tyrant. In an effort to prove their sincerity, Lisen and Korin participate in the Farii, the spring fertility ritual which changes everything for Lisen. She returns to Garla with a brilliant but damning plan that she believes will ensure her victory against her brother.

D. Hart St. Martin continues to explore the role of sexism in our culture by presenting us with Garla, a world functioning without sex-based stereotypes.  In Lisen, readers find a hero who acts without waiting for a man to fix or do everything for her, and she’s not alone. The women of Garla, angel or demon, exhibit strength, courage and daring to equal that of their male counterparts. Young women will treasure every moment immersed in this world. Look for Blooded, the final and climactic volume in the Lisen of Solsta trilogy, coming in 2015.

Makoti Enters the Kraal ~ Book Cover and Design

This cover project, Makoti Enters the Kraal, by Phangisile Mtshali, was very different for me. I've never been commissioned to create an African scene, so I was excited throughout the project. I anticipate book two will be just as rewarding, if not more so.

blurb:

Ndiwe is uMakoti - a new bride of the Mantshinga family. Madly in love and excited for her new life, she soon realises that not all is as it seems, in particular the strange, menacing family cat, Madevana. Just what role does the feline play in the family? And why is she treated with such respect and awe?

Ndiwe is in terrible danger, from many different quarters. With the aid of a mysterious helper, she must not only protect herself, but the lives of her children – with or without her beloved husband, Akha.

~

“An absorbing, emotional and chilling tale of African mythology and the practice of witchcraft, Makoti Enters the Kraal is also a fascinating account of makoti, exploring the life and culture of African family life and will keep you gripped until the last page.”

— Karen Perkins, bestselling author of the Valkyrie Series and Thores-Cross

Life on Hold awarded Children's Literary Classics Silver Seal

I don't boast how many of the books I've done covers for because I find it a bit pretentious. I show off my work, and the books they accompany, and allow people to judge for themselves how they rate my work, gauging whether I do the books honor or not. Having said that, I do like to promote the great books and authors and publishers I have the privilege to work with as their cover artist & designer.

The latest book to win a very prestigious award is Beverly Stowe McClure's Life on Hold, a 4RV Publishing publication. Rather than regurgitate the publisher's announcement, I'm posting an excerpt and will link ya'll the the 4RV Reading, Writing, & Art Newsletter.

4RV Publishing received notice that Life on Hold by Beverly Stowe McClure was awarded Children's Literary Classics' Silver Seal. All authors of children's and young adult books should seek this honor. ... [Link]
