5 #WRITING TOOLS EVERY #WRITER SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ... #AmWriting #AmEditing

I work with a lot of new and not-so-new writers, and I hear about all sorts of tools and sites they find helpful all of the time. Here are a few I hear are really helpful. And even though I'm not a writer myself, I find them useful, too. (When one works with writers, one should try not to look too illiterate, lol.)

I know as an artist, ideas and inspiration strike when they want where they want. Not always when we are at the desk or drawing table. The LiveScribe 3 smartpen uses Bluetooth technology to send your sketches and ideas to your smartphone or tablet. When combined with the LiveScribe notebooks they create a special pattern on the paper and record your pen strokes. And to go a step cooler ... the pen also takes dictation!!! The pen records audio with a built-in microphone. (I wish I had this when I was in college.) Check it out ...

Grammarly is used by my whole family. For me, it helps me think more about what I'm writing than worrying about looking illiterate. Grammarly can be used as a free extension for Chrome, Safari, or Firefox web browsers (I use it for every blog post), or the online text editor. Grammarly Premium, a paid service, checks for a broader range of errors, detects plagiarism, detecting passive voice, and offers style and vocabulary enhancements.

In today's market, we all have to self-promote to some extent, even authors and artists with big-time agents and houses. But unless you went to business school for marketing, you're likely to feel lost as to how to write good content. Even authors can find it a challenge because content writing is not the same as novel or story writing. Content helps with organization, ideas, and more. Though they were designed with big companies in mind, there is a lot of benefit for the little-guy, too.

Another software syncing tool that helps us creator-types ......take advantage of when inspiration strikes anywhere. Evernote lets you capture, nurture, and share your ideas across any device. Organize your life, be more productive, and take better notes.

So what ya waiting on? Got to finishing that book so I can do the rest :D

Blurb for A Family for Leona ...

Ten-year-old Leona Chapter doesn’t understand why her papa left his six children at the Brooklyn Home for Homeless Children after their mother’s death in 1921. Each day she prays he’ll return and take his children home. God, however, isn’t listening. Her brothers and sisters are either adopted or run away, leaving only Leona and Baby Mildred in the orphanage. Leona promises she and Mildred will be together for always. A promise she cannot keep, for Leona, along with her friend Noah, who she defends from the bullies Hiram and Jehu, and several other orphans, are soon on a train headed to Texas, while her sister stays at the orphanage. Leona vows she’ll go back to Brooklyn, the first chance she gets.

I'm giving Goodreads another try ... What's your experience?

Back when Goodreads was a fresh, new platform for authors to promote their work (yes ... I'm dating myself 😋), my brain told me it would be a great place to find indie authors or publishers looking for cover artists and designers such as myself. Unfortunately, back then, there really weren't many discussions or forums or listings for artists. I spent a lot of time sort of milling about and not getting any real leads to potential clients. It was just 'about the authors'.

So, as recommended by most marketing specialists, since I wasn't seeing any traction in that particular marketing outlet after a couple years, I closed my Goodreads account to focus my energies on other social media platforms that were drawing traffic and attention to my site and my artwork.

Today, however, a good friend of mine suggested I promote my work on Goodreads on a thread he stumbled across when doing a Google/Bing search for "book cover artist". Showing up in the top spot was: Goodreads Authors/Readers discussion, under the Author Resource Round Table > Book Cover Artists & Illustrators thread. It's a long thread, so I linked to page 28 where I tossed my little stone into the pool. The thread is several years old but artists are still posting their promos, and again, Google/Bing spiders seem to like it.

Now all there is to do is wait and see if anyone at Goodreads takes my bait. 🎣

Leave me a note in the comments about your Goodreads experience. And if you like, find / friend / follow me there, too.

*Edit*     I found some more discussions/threads/ groups for cover artists ...

Welcome Cover Artists!

EBook Cover Artists
Print Cover Artists
Fantasy Cover Artist
Western Cover Artist

***And a special note ... After just one day back on Goodreads, I already have a promising project proposal. Wish me luck. 🍀

Crystal M Romero (@Crstl_M_Romero) commissions South Bay Chihuahua Meetup's official logo for t-shirts for charity.

I started working with Crystal and her writing a few years ago (see her latest book info below). But our latest project together was a different sort of 'labor of love' project ... A logo for her favorite group, South Bay Chihuahua Meetup

black on light colors
white on dark colors

The South Bay Chihuahua Meetup is "a small, informal group of Chi-owners who gather once a month at a dog park.; no one person in charge, no officials. Just chi-owners who like to get their pups together for a play date."

South Bay Chihuahua Meetup wanted a way to raise awareness and funds to help dogs in need of rescue. So ... I drew and designed a logo that would work on both light and dark t-shirts, which are now available on Teespring. Just follow the t-shirts to pick your favorite color choices. Better, still? Pick every color ... It's for a great cause!

They have both a Meetup page and a Facebook page. Their current charity focus is on Grateful Dogs, a registered 501-(c) (3) non-profit organization (TIN 94-3251570), and though located in San Francisco, they go all over the Bay Area and rescue dogs from high kill shelters.

South Bay Chihuahua Meetup members can now share in the community while donating to this very worthy charity. 100% of the sales for their group tee shirts will go to Grateful Dogs rescue.

If you'd like more info, get in touch with Crystal on twitter @Crstl_M_Romero or Corina, the group's founder, at the Meetup page or Facebook page.

And while you're at it, follow Crystal and ask her how to buy a signed copy of her book, Valley of the Dead. 😲

Princess Breeze ~ cover art and design for Beverly Stowe McClure (@beverlymcclure) and 4RV Publishing (@4RV)

I'm excited to announce, the cover art & design for Princess Breeze (the sequel to Just Breeze, written by Beverly Stowe McClure), is ready for show

I can't say enough about how much I enjoy every project I do for one of Beverly's books. She is such an amazing storyteller. Combine that with 4RV Publishing's high emphasis on good writing and rigorous editing (which is woefully lacking even with the big houses these days), and you have an award-winning combination.

~

Just Breeze

Eighth grade starts out the same as every other year for Breeze Brannigan. She’s still the tallest student, boy or girl, in her class, wears shoes that would fit an elephant, and her smile reveals dazzling braces that blind everyone within ten feet.

Then she meets Cam, the new boy in school who speaks with an accent and must be from another planet, for none of the earthling boys she knows are so polite. He also has a secret, a secret that could mean life or death for Cam and his mother and that Breeze must help him keep.

Princess Breeze

For months, Breeze Brannigan has heard nothing from Cam, the prince she met at school and who disappeared one night without telling her goodbye. The night she graduates from middle school, however, he contacts her and invites her to visit Isla del Fuego, his home. Who could refuse such an invitation?

Breeze, along with her whole family and best friends, Amy and Allison, soon sail to the island, where she and Cam renew their friendship. But, danger lurks; a legend comes to life; Breeze finds herself in the middle of a battle that can have only one winner.

The Hungry Monster Book Review: Interviews D. Hart St. Martin (@hartstm) about her Lisen of Solsta trilogy ...

I like sharing positive reviews and interviews that my authors tell me about. I especially like it when the share includes compliments on my work. 😁

Before I send you over to The Hungry Monster Book Review site to check out the latest interview, Painful Sacrifice (May 6th), with D. Hart St. Martin (@hartstm) about her Lisen of Solsta trilogy, I thought I'd share my favorite part of that interview and some of my personal experience with D. and the series.

The cover art for your three books are very well done. What decisions went into the art direction for the covers?

My cover artist, Aidana WillowRaven of WillowRaven Illustration and Design, is brilliant, and she definitely knows her stuff.

Told you I had a favorite part. 😊

I've really enjoyed getting to know Lisen, as well as D., as I've worked on the series. She's such an interesting character. Though it may not be too easily noticeable on the cover (we had to modify our initial idea to ensure the cover wasn't risky), Lisen has some amazing physical attributes that make her unique. You really have to check out the world of Solsta.

Don't forget to check out the wonderful interview with D. at The Hungry Monster Book Review and the individual reviews for each book:   Fractured ... Tainted ... Blooded ... Protector of Thristas ... and her previous 'The Darkness in the Light' (Mar 5th) and  'It's Do or Die' (Apr 30th) interviews.

Be sure to follow D. Hart St. Martin online to stay updated. 😊

Onto wrapping up the next book :-D

INTO THE ABYSS ~ cover design for Mark Roysdon (@MRoysdonAuthor)

Who's up for some true-crime?
I know my typical project includes both original cover art and design, but this time, the author had taken a couple photos and had a clear plan for me to follow. All I had to do was put the elements together and ready it for print.
At first, I was a bit unsure about a cover with a greyscale palette but I really think the yellow pops against the grays and works for the genre.
Check out the blurb:
Into The Abyss is the story of Mark's roller coaster life of being a trusted, respected person and member of society to becoming a convicted felon forever changing his status in the same society he must exist in.

During criminal proceedings and after his conviction, Mark never had the opportunity to tell his side of the story.

The victim and his wife, who actually pulled the trigger, told their stories through several media outlets and even on a national daytime television program.
Finally, Mark shares his side without omission or interruption. The journey continues through his incarceration within the confines of The State of Ohio Department of Corrections with many true twist and turns.

~

AUTHOR BIO:
Mark Roysdon has more than 20 years working in public safety starting out as a volunteer firefighter at the age of eighteen. When he turned twenty-three, he worked for the U.S. Air Force as a security contractor in a highly sensitive classified program.

Mark was employed as a Law Enforcement Officer in a busy metropolitan city in Ohio with twelve years of experience. Mark then assumed responsibility in the corporate world as an Investigator conducting criminal and non-criminal investigations spanning both east and west coasts of the United States. After five years, Mark became a victim of corporate downsizing and it was near this point when his downward spiral Into The Abyss began.

These days, Mark and his wife enjoy spending time on the Gulf of Mexico while exploring wildlife.

Don't forget to follow Mark online to stay updated. 😊
