LETTERS FROM BLITZ ~ cover art and design for Dan Santos (@dansantosnovels):

What if your best friend crossed the Rainbow Bridge? What if he saw your suffering and wants to send you a message from that magical place to let you know he’s OK? This is the story of a dog named Blitz who changed the Rainbow Bridge forever.

Today's post features something a little different for me. Yes, Letters from Blitz qualifies as a fantasy ... after all, it's about a dog that's met by his Spirit Guide (that has some really cool abilities) as he travels the Rainbow Bridge. A lot happens after that, but I'm not tellin'. Ya gotta read it to find out. 😜

I like to mention what challenges any particular project present, but this one had A LOT, lol.

The 1st challenge was really a genre limitation. The story is a fantasy, where the primary characters are dogs. The problem lied in how to make it clear to fantasy lovers that this is a book they will enjoy in a split-second glance.

Think about some of your favorite fantasy book covers and what initially caught your attention, alerting you to the fact that it was fantasy. Did you see a mystical creature like an elf or a fairy? Or maybe there are swords and sorcerers? The challenge here was how to represent a canine Spirit Guide that looks like a regular dog, just bigger. I didn't think the environment, where the pair are walking on clouds was enough to express the bigger dog's mystical abilities.

The 2nd challenge was replicating a believable Weimaraner breed of dog. The multitude of photos available for reference doesn't truly represent the 'grey-ghost' quality the breed is famous for. Something in the photographic translation alters the colors to look more greyish-brown, which is not what Dan was looking for.

And the 3rd challenge was to make sure my cloud-world didn't look too flat. Depth and scale in cloud-scapes, ocean-scapes, and desert-scapes can be deceptive, even in the real-world, because there is little to judge scale or distance with unless there is a ship, or a tree, or cactus between us and the horizon line, to compare with foreground elements.

Dan Santos likes to tell stories.

He’s traveled to many places and seen incredible things, beautiful people, unbelievable goodness and despicable evil in all their manifestations. These places, people and things might go unnoticed unless someone tells others about them. That’s what he does, hoping to transport readers from their everyday reality to a different world.

His writing reflects years of serving his country and family as a soldier, diplomat, son, husband, father and human companion. All these he’s done with great intensity because he believes there is no other way to live life.

GEHENNA RISES ~ cover art and design for Julian Boote (@JulianBoote) and check out the awesome reviews it's received from KIRKUS REVIEW (@kirkusreviews) and READER'S FAVORITE (@ReadersFavorite) ...

available in hardcover, paperback & ebook
Today's post features another fun project ... ZOMBIES.

Julian Boote's novel, Gehenna Rises, has been awarded some amazing reviews from both KIRKUS and READER'S FAVORITE.

Kikus said:
"Smart, invigorating, and, like the best zombie stories, relentlessly creepy."

Reader's Favorite said:
"Simply put, a great read."

Julian Boote is an actor, author, screenwriter and filmmaker with a BA in Film & Art from Reading University in the UK, with a number of short and feature film credits to his name in the roles of producer, screenwriter, and second unit director. In recent years Julian has returned to his first love; acting, and is thriving, garnering a number of notable roles in front of the camera.

Creating stories has been a pleasure for Julian since childhood, and he hasn’t stopped; his current projects being a number of feature scripts.

Back cover blurb ...
available in hardcover, paperback & ebook
The first Spring of the Zombie War, and – for one small enclave of living trapped behind the lines in Britain – the Battle for Survival is about to heat up in the worst way imaginable…

“I saw the Devil... with all his eyes.”

This is the frightening warning given to a rescue team by the sole survivor of a devastated fortified commune, four months on from O-Day; the start of the zombie global pandemic.

For Alec Mitchell and Jennifer Edwards at the Beeston Safe Haven, Cheshire, the nearby commune’s loss raises disquieting questions. While evidence initially indicates an attack by raiders, Mitchell and Edwards’ investigation discovers an altogether more disturbing development. The zombie virus – La Plaga – is adapting, healing its undead hosts. So whatever its injury, a zombie will always rise again.

Alec and Jennifer consider that news bad enough. But the situation turns out to be far, far worse than even they realise. For zombies are but the rotten seeds of a monstrous cadaverous fruit growing nearby. Growing, in fact, everywhere…

We thought we knew what we were dealing with during the Zombie War, only to learn – at terrible cost – how catastrophically wrong we were.

Now, having at last been cleared for public consumption by the Ministry of Population Morale Steering, Gehenna Rises shows us we are very likely wrong again…

available in hardcover, paperback & ebook
You may notice the cover style doesn't conform to the 'look' of most zombie novels and feels more like a crime-thriller or suspense novel. Being a zombie-thiller, though, I hope the artwork and design will capture enough attention from both target audiences. Let me know if you agree.

And don't forget to follow Julian online to stay up-to-date with all of his creative endeavors...

UNHOLY WARRIOR ~ cover art and design for Rebecka Jäger (@JagerWriter)

I love, love, LOVE, projects that allow me to explore themes outside my usual repertoire. Unholy Warrior, by Rebecka Jäger, blends magic, action, mythology, war, spies, and much, much more, all in the harsh, yet beautiful, setting of the Arctic.

But I'm sure you'd rather read about Rebecka's pending book that my excitement over the art. So let me share the book's blurb and a little bit about the author...

Rebane Nordstrom, an expert sniper in the ranks of ODON, (an elite reconnaissance unit in frozen, post-apocalyptic Europe twenty-five years after the nuclear holocaust), doesn’t know how to give up ... ever.

Escaping prison and avoiding being blackmailed into becoming a double agent, Rebane realizes some enemies are too big and strong to be overcome alone. No woman is an island ... not even one as capable as Rebane Nordstrom. Help is around the corner, but sometimes, looks are deceiving.

A desperate alliance between two women from the opposite sides of the war between the Russian Federation and the European Union is forged, and the totem animals and Gods of the North yield immense power for those who stop and pray. The extreme weather can wipe out entire armies and personified nature, magic, and omens shield Rebane from an overpowering and cruel enemy.

“The future roots in the past and humanity may never learn. Aggression runs deep inside our genome. That’s what keeps us at the top of the food chain: as the ruling species which can kill and torture at will. Great gifts come with great responsibility—something we haven’t learned yet.”       —Rebecka Jäger

Rebecka Jäger was born in Northern Finland. She studied history at the University of Helsinki and screenwriting at Aalto University’s Department of Film, Television, and Scenography.

She wrote professional texts throughout her career but decided to learn the delicate art of writing fiction later on. She mastered the craft in different writer’s workshops—always keen to become a better writer.
Her work ranges from dystopian to historical and stays mostly within the thriller genre. She is a passionate hunter and musher. Arctic nature is a recurring theme in her writing.

The original artwork is also available as a wall print through my Imagekind gallery, sample below.

THE DRAGON SHIFTERS AT SOUTHGATE ~ cover art and design for Sherry Leclerc (@sleclercauthor) and Ternias Publishing (@terniaspublish)

First ... DRAGON ... Now that that's out of my system, lol ... I can tell you about my latest project.

It took me longer than expected (we had to move, which is always a pain, then I had an unexpected surgery) but I finally have the chance to show off Sherry Leclerc's latest book, book two of the Seers Series, The Dragon Shifters at Southgate.

First I'll share the book's blurb before posting the excellent review Literary Titan gave it, along with the award LT bestowed it, too.

Blurb:
A Seer Champion sworn
to protect Southgate.

A Dragon Shifter Lord sworn
to protect his clan.

Can they join forces to defeat the evil
that threatens to lay waste to them all?
Seer Champion Talwyn Sevi must protect Southgate and its keystone against the evil forces that threaten to destroy them. Knowing she cannot do it alone, she seeks help from a group of reclusive Dragon Shifters. In return, she offers them information vital to their survival. Can Talwyn gain the Dragon Lord’s trust in time to save Southgate and the dragonkin?

The Dragon Shifters at SouthgateBook 2 of The Seers Series is a creative piece of literature with an action-packed plot and well-developed characters in a world with a rich backstory. This book has an enthralling story line that constantly hints at something larger. The author’s writing style is simple, making it easily accessible by anyone, and her way of narrating the story naturally capture’s the reader’s interest.”

Blurb:

An ancient evil threatens the realm of Sterrenvar. A race of people called the seers had appointed themselves Guardians of the Realm, guarding the safety of their world and all the people in it.

Maelona Sima is one of four seer champions tasked with protecting the four keystones from being breached by evil forces, thus leaving an immeasurable magical force free to be used against the realm’s inhabitants. Yet Maelona is more than a seer. She is unique in her world, and she is the best hope of survival for the people of Sterrenvar…the very people who once hunted down and killed many of the seer people out of fear and mistrust.

Protecting the keystones is the first line of defense against the evil sorcerer who wishes to enslave the realm. Can Maelona, the guardian of the keystone at Eastgate, and her friends Blaez, a wolf shifter, and Gareth, a human prince, bring together their peoples to save Eastgate from destruction in this first book of the Seers series?

SUBLIMATION; cover art and design for CD/album by A Little Fire Scarecrow (Coraline Ada Ehmke @CoralineAda)

Available widely on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, and Google Play soon.
Title treatment may be different when purchased.
I'm excited to share my latest project with all of you. Unlike most of my commissions, the cover art and design for Sublimation, an album by A Little Fire Scarecrow, (AKA Coraline Ada Ehmke, @CoralineAda on Twitter) will be available for purchase soon.

I met Coraline on Twitter, which is how I meet most of my clients. We got to talking about her art needs for her newest album. After a bit of back and forth, I learned she had sketched something that captures the emotions that inspired this album. Using her sketch as a guide, I set to recreating my own interpretation of it. (See below.)

*Title treatment may be different when purchased. Client had a different aesthetic and you wanted to match an existing brand-look. The client gets what the client wants, of course, but I was given permission to show my version, as well, in my folio and promos. Thanks, Coraline :).

Here's a closer look at the art, minus title treatment:

bio: A Little Fire Scarecrow is a recording project by Coraline Ada Ehmke, a transgender musician who writes, records, and produces from her home studio in Chicago. Coraline sings, plays bass, guitar, keyboards, and a variety of folk instruments, and her music features occasional contributions from Kevin Chatham (bass) and Alva Snædís (guitar and bass).

Coraline believes that music is literature. Every song is a story told in words and sounds, the music painting a landscape, creating a sense of space and place. Her style encompasses rich layers superimposed on each other to create a distinctive, other-worldly quality. She draws inspiration from Legendary Pink Dots, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Swans, Gary Numan, and a number of post-rock, chamber psych, and old-school goth artists.

original sketch by Coraline Ada Ehmke
Coraline has released several albums, all available widely on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, and Google Play. You can hear samples and get links to listen or buy at alittlefirescarecrow.com. She is also co-author (with Naomi Freeman) of the book The Compassionate Coder, a guide to practicing empathy as a software developer. You can learn more about the book at compassionatecoder.com. Visit Coraline's website to learn more about this diverse creative.

Be sure to follow Coraline online to keep track of news and special events:
